Oatmeal is a common quick fix meal in our home. If you frequently read my menu plan’s you have seen Crock Pot Apple Oatmeal countless times. Usually it’s for breakfast, but sometimes we eat it for dinner. Like tonight, I just didn’t feel like making the dinner I had planned.
Well, that and I’d just purchased some steel cut oats and was dying to try those less processed oat groats out. Oat groats…isn’t that hilarious! It seriously makes me laugh out loud.
My oat loving self took a long time to try out steel cut oats. I didn’t have anything against the less processed oat groats I was just buried in a massive amount of Quaker oats that I needed to use up first.
Wondering what in the world steel cut oats are? Well, to make steel cut oats, the oat groat is cut into only about 2 0r 3 pieces. To make rolled oats, however, the oat groat is steamed and flattened with a roller. Quick oats are flattened even more. This means that you have a longer cooking time with steel cut, but the good thing about them is that it takes your body longer to break it down.
I was surprised at just how delicious they are. They don’t have that gummy or mushy consistency that regular oats sometimes have. They still had some chew to them-and chew is good in oats.
If you aren’t covered in a mountain of Quaker Quick oats, as I was, I would encourage you to TRY. THEM. OUT!
