Make Your Own Customized Cupcake Tower

by Katie on August 29, 2012

Cupcakes are so cute at parties, but have you ever wondered how to display them in a cute way? Buying a cupcake tower can be expensive, but luckily I have found a great DIY idea over at Annie’s Eats.

It’s perfect for displaying my favorites – Hummingbird Cupcakes and Blackberry Swirl Cheesecake Cupcakes!

Not only is it clever, but it’s great for the budget! I used some cans I already had in my stockpile (they were expired – shame on me) and everything else just cost about $5! Very doable, right?

Ready to get started on your own cupcake tower? I like visuals, so here is a picture of what you need:

DIY Cupcake Tower

Supplies:
-2 cans of the same size
-1 small short can for the base
-cardboard rounds (2 of each size) (I used 6, 9, and 12 inch boards)
(I purchase these at my local cake supply store. Craft stores usually carry them or you could buy a sheet of foam core and cut into circles.)
-ribbon
-scrapbook paper to cover boards (3 12×12 sheets)
-scrapbook paper to cover cans (2 12×12 sheets)
-hot glue gun
-super glue (not pictured)
-scissors

How to Make Your Own Cupcake Tower

1.) Glue the cardboard rounds together with a glue gun, white sides out.

2.) Cut scrapbook paper to the right size to cover the top of each cardboard and glue it on. I’m all about chevron, so that’s what I chose, but you could certainly do a plain color.

3.) Cover each soup can with scrapbook paper and hot glue it on.

4.) Superglue the 12″ board to the small can. Then superglue the first soup can on top of the 12″ board. Repeat until you have the tower put together.

5.) Glue ribbon on the edges. Sorry – I forgot to take a pic of that step, but it’s pretty self explanatory, right?

*Step number 4 was the hardest for me. It took a little work to get the soup can all lined up right in the middle of the boards. I’m blaming on the fact that the chevron pattern was so busy – it disoriented me. But in all reality I am challenged in the area of math or geometry or whatever you call that sort of thing. ;)

There you go – the finished product topped with some cute cupcakes!

Note: To give you an idea of the size – filled up it holds about 20 cupcakes!

That is a really cute idea! It looks like something even someone as “craft-challenged” as myself could handle. It would really add to the decor of a birthday or really any other party.

Great idea! I’ve thought about the crystal cake stands and the ones created with old dinner plates. Thanks for sharing. Stopping by from Frugal Friday!

Thaleia, I’ve seen the ones made with dinner plates and they are very cool, too! I’ve wanted to make one for a long time!
