Homemade Dulce de Leche

by Katie on July 10, 2013

Today I’ve got a great sweet, creamy, carameley treat to share.

Homemade Dulce de Leche. Seriously delicious and sinful.

This is one of those things that I have wanted to make for forever and a day, but never got around to it. And then when I did I was asking myself why in the world did I not do this like 5 years ago when I heard about it?!?

It couldn’t be easier - it’s just one ingredient – sweetened condensed milk. Dump it in a dish and bake it for an hour and a half.

You can make a pie with it, pour it over ice cream, eat it with a spoon…or if you want to get all healthy you could dip apple slices in it. Whatever you do – you are going to love it!

Homemade Dulce de Leche

Yield: 2 1/2 cups

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425. Get out a pie plate and a roasting pan or some kind of pan that is big enough to hold the pie plate.
  2. Open both cans and pour the contents into a pie plate. Cover the pie plate tightly with foil and place it into the roasting pan. Fill the roasting pan with enough water to cover half of the pie plate. Place in the oven and bake for 1 1/2 hours - making sure to check the water level half way through.
  3. Remove from oven and take pie plate out of roasting pan. Remove foil and stir the Dulce de Leche - it will look kind of lumpy at first but it will smooth out once you stir or whisk it. It will also thicken up some once it cools.
  4. Depending on what you are using it for you can use it warm or let cool and store in the refrigerator to cool.

I’ve seen cans of this in the store, but have never tried it. I had no idea it would be that easy to make. I love caramel so I think I will have to try this.

Hi Cherie! I had never tried sweetened condensed milk right out of the can until I made this…and I took a little bite and then added a little to my iced coffee. It sure is good, but it is better caramelized for sure!
