We went out of town last weekend and one thing I really wanted to do was to get some freshly picked apples straight from the orchard! I got 5 pounds of Honeycrisp and a half bushel of Cortland. The apple man said that a half bushel is about 20 pounds of apples. I just know I have a ton of apples on hand!
I also got some fresh apple cider and the prettiest deep purple-pink mum to go with my fall themed front porch!
(Please look past the off center door mat. Aghh…Must fix that ASAP.)
I fell in love with the mum when we were there on Saturday, but I didn’t get it because we weren’t coming home until Sunday. I loved it SO MUCH because I had never seen one that color and I may have mentioned a few times that I was sad I didn’t get to bring a mum home. I’ve seen light purple and red purple, but never a pink purple.
And I have to have this unique mum. I’m weird, I know…
Since I couldn’t live without it we drove all the way back there the next day just to get it! Then I decided we would plant it by the front porch – why not have this beauty return next year, right?
But it looked dumb by itself and needed a twin for the other side of the front porch. But remember, that was the most unique color I had ever seen. And a different color across from it would look bad. The plan of having the most beautiful and unique mum backfired because I now had to find another…ugh…
But isn’t it a pretty color?
The next day I was babysitting Ezra so he and I went on a search for a twin.
I thought about hauling it back to the orchard in Indianapolis and quickly came to my senses – It’s JUST a mum – let’s not get all ridiculous.
We ventured out to a local nursery instead. He had a blast looking at all the colors and pumpkins. I had a blast because I found a close match. And I celebrated with a Starbucks one the way home . It’s not an exact match because the flowers are slightly different, but how could I expect it to be.
After all, I already had the most unique and beautiful mum I have ever seen.
Lesson of the day is that buying the most beautiful and unique mum isn’t always the best plan of action. Next time I may want to stick with ordinary orange. I wouldn’t be the envy of my neighbors, but I’d be able to duplicate easily.
But then again I will be happy every time I pull up and see my unique mums…and that is worth the search of a twin.
The changing of seasons and all the beautiful things that come with it are so amazing and beautiful. I don’t know how one can see these things and deny that God created them.
What small and random things bring you happiness?
Now onto the apples…
I’ve got a boatload of them and here is what I’m planning for them:
Homemade Applesauce - and TON of it! I freeze it in quart size freezer bags and it freezes wonderfully!
Apple Crack Cake - I made this with some of my apples when my family got together for the Red’s game the other night. It was delicious as all of Nicole’s recipes I’ve tried have been. I will be making this again for sure!
Creamy Caramel Apple Dip – This will be for the Honeycrisp apples…best apples ever!
Sweet Potato with Italian Sausage, Apple, and Onion – A unique combo that is one of my favorite fall time dinners. Plus it’s really healthy!
And that will probably be it for this batch of apples because I want to make enough Applesauce to last all year long!
